What is a profit margin and why is it important?
Gross profit margin is the percentage of money you make after paying your cost of goods sold (COGS). For example, if you purchased a product for $10 and sold it for $20, your gross profit margin is 50%.

The formula for gross profit margin is (revenue – COGS) / revenue.

Let us put these formulas into action:
- You bought 100 items at $10 each; your total expense for the goods (COGS) is $1,000
- You sold each for $25, and you managed to sell all 100 of them; your total revenue is $2,500
- $2,500 (gross revenue) - $1,000 (cost of goods sold or COGS) = $1,500 (gross profit)
- Now, we divide $1,500 (gross profit) by $2,500 (revenue) and we get 0.6.
- We multiply this by 100 and we get 60%.
- The gross profit margin is 60%
On the other hand, let us say that our Amazon fees total $500. We also have to pay for our Facebook ads, say, $500. After paying all that, we still have $500 from our gross profit.
- To get the net profit margin, we divide $500 by $2,500
- We get 0.20
- Multiply that by 100 and we get 20%
- Our net profit margin is 20%
